In this article, we observe the following points with regard to the passive forms of verbs which are intransitivized, as collected from Kouzien and Sinmeikai (Japanese dictionaries). (i) There are 17 occurrences of intransitivized passive form derived from transitive verbs; (ii) there are three occurrences of intransitivized passive form derived from 유대타동사 (transitive verbs with their intransitive counterparts); (iii) there is a single occurrence of intransitivized passive form derived from intransitive verbs without their transitive counterparts; and (iv) there are two occurrence of intransitivized passive form derived from 유대자동사 (intransitive verbs with their transitive counterparts). This research result indicates the following points. (i) the conditions on passive formation are satisfied when a subject is an animate noun which bears the semantic role of agent. (ii) if a subject is not a noun which does not bear the semantic role of agent (but denoting natural phenomena, cause of events, etc.), the verbs are usually intransitivized. (iii) if a subject is an inanimate noun and the agent position is occupied by a noun which does not bear the semantic role of agent (but denoting natural phenomena, cause of events, etc.), there is a stronger tendency that the verbs are intransitivized even if a noun at the agent position is marked with particles such as ni, niyotte, and kara.
