The relational dynamics of Wordsworth's childhood exposure to his mother in The Prelude--presence and absence, life and death, union and separateness--are crucial to self-construction and inventiveness of imagination. He reveals, “I grew up/Fostered alike by beauty and by fear.” Wordsworth’s ambivalent regard for his mother(nature) is explainable by the concept of maternity in Melanie Klein's theory. Examples of the cognitive dissonance in Klein’s paranoid-schizoid position are throughout The Prelude. In showing the satisfactory feelings from his nurturing mother, the narrator reveals his good mother, declaring that she has been “The props of [his] affections.” Wordsworth also undergoes persecutory anxiety when he fears the retaliation of his bad mother (her death): his threatening experiences are implied well in the Winander boy episode. Two spots of time episodes in The Prelude show how the narrator recovers from self-reproach and guilty feelings in the depressive position, and recognizes gratitude and love for his mother(nature): His minds “are nourished and invisibly repaired.”
