This paper concerns the possibility and implications of AI’s tea ceremony. In coping with the issue, we explicate the following seven distinct aspects of tea: ① tea as beverage for quenching one's thirst, ② tea as nutrition food for supplementing one’s body nourishment and disease healing, ③ tea as health food for psychological stability and healing, ④ tea as favorite food for enjoying the taste, color, and scent, ⑤ tea as a medium helping one’s dialogue and communication with others, ⑥ tea as an ethical or aesthetical means for courtesy, personality, and cultivation, and ⑦ tea as a medium for philosophical or religious pursuit. From these considerations, we clarify the notions of ‘tea ceremony’, ‘AI’, and ‘performing a tea ceremony’. And then we investigate whether it is possible for AI to perform the tea ceremony and what implications might arise in the tea culture of the future. Interestingly, these questions overlap with the question as to what aspects of tea will grow in importance in the age of strong AI. Regarding these issues, we claim and defend the view that although the materials that constitute humans and AI are different, as far as they carry out some form of tea-ceremony, that which we call the mental aspects of tea culture, such as ⑤, ⑥, ⑦ above, are rather likely to remain in the future.
