The purpose of this study is to examine the views of college students in relation to their native English speaking (NES) instructor’s non-verbal instructional behavior (NVIB). Additionally, the NES instructor’s own views on the use of such behaviors are also investigated. Based on the observation of and questionnaires completed by the 18 students and their NES instructor, this study examines the extent which the students’ and the instructor’s views match or differ and what implications such results may offer for teaching EFL to Korean students. According to the analysis of videotapes, surveys, and NVIB check-up charts, students were well aware of and viewed positively the instructor’s use of NVIBs and thought they were helpful in understanding course contents. The NES instructor also used diverse NVIBs but did not think he used many emotional and evaluative NVIBs in class. Accordingly, some pedagogical and research implications are suggested, especially focusing on understanding the diverse functions of NVIBs in relation with verbal counterparts as well as emphasizing the importance of situated context of teaching and learning.
