The greatest event in the late 16th century in East Asia was the Japanese Invations of Korea(1592-1598). The war lasted seven years, during which there were two alteration between war and peace. The diplomatic negotiation which began in 1593 was the first change of the state of war, and the second change occurred after Japan’s Second Invation of Korea(1597-1598), before which Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the ruler of Japan, was not quite satisfied with the title of King of Japan conferred by Ming Danasty. The strategy Ming Dynasty took to meet Japan during Japan’s Second Invation of Korea(1597-1598) was not simply consistent but constantly changing. After Toyotomi Hideyoshi was confered King of Japan, the original response strategy of the Ming Dynasty was to continue diplomatic negotiations, but the subsequent Japanese military landing in Busan touched the bottom line of Ming Dynasty, and Ming Dynasty soon adjusted the response strategy to military intervention to send troops to Korea. However, Ming Dynasty maintained diplomatic contacts with Japan to see the situation at that time, for it believed that it was still possible to resolve the conflict by diplomatic means, trying to use military force as a backup force to force Japan to make diplomatic concessions. With the outbreak of Japan’s Second Invation of Korea(1597-1598), Ming Dynasty completely abandoned diplomatic means and adopted attack strategy to defeating Japanese invaders by military forces. Although the setback of the late war destabilized Ming Dynasty’s strategy, Ming Dynasty finally ended the war with its attack strategy.
