This study aims at analyzing cases of reduction-type remodeling of aging apartment housings in Germany that provide the contents and implications for the remodeling of aging apartment housing in Korea. It is carried out through the literature review in accordance with domestic reduction-type remodeling and the analysis of selected cases in Germany. The results are as follows. First, there is no study on the reduction-type of remodeling. Secondly, the analyses of cases can derive the following results: the direction of the reduction-type remodeling should be preceded by a decision in accordance with the city regeneration or redevelopment plan, and then the aging apartment housing is reduced through the demolition of upper 1~2 floors or the partial demolition, and through the demolition of vertical line in the edge or the separation by the demolition of vertical line in the middle, and lastly through the integration of the units in vertical and horizontal direction. Thirdly, the improved characteristics of the remodeling cases can be found through the buffer space composition which provides a private garden for the ground floor residents, by creating a partially demolished upper floor as a rooftop garden to expand the unit's interior, designing the facades, and installing balconies, etc. Finally, a single standard floor type, three or eighteen floor types can be referred to the points that have been remodeled into a custom space after consultation with the residents. These results can be referenced for the domestic reduction-type remodeling. Hopefully, this research will be utilized for the domestic reduction-type remodeling industry.
