Apartment housing is the most appropriate type of residence for Korea where it is densely populated and currently in Korea, occupies the highest percentage starting with the first apartment complex in 1960. Today, with the improvement in quality of life, many people have a higher desire to live at a comfortable residential space. Especially as more people want to have a space to express their individuality unlike in the past when they took it for granted to live in a standardized apartment house, the remodelling of the residential space has recently been increasing continuously. If adding deteriorated apartment reconstruction, more new apartments are also increasing continuously. In this respect, this study aims to examine the shortage phenomenon of storage space that is very much talked about as an inconvenient item when residing in an apartment and provide improvement directions as a way to increase the convenience of apartment dwellers. As research methodology, this study selected the apartments in Japan, similar to the living environment of Korea as comparison target and in terms of size, apartments for a family of four with the area of exclusive use space of less than 85㎡ as target of this study. As a result of comparing the storage space that is basically provided between Korea vs. Japan by setting the storage space necessary for actual life that were drawn from precedent studies as a standard, it appeared that the basic storage space was insufficient in Korea than in Japan. To complement this, this study proposed additional installation of a built-in cabinet as a way. Further studies need to solve ‘shortage of storage space in an apartment’ through case study and analysis in various directions.
