How to develop local architectural culture with new building materials and technologies is one of the key issues in the field of architecture today. The architectural works of Chinese–American architect I. M. Pei are located in many countries. They are classical modern architectures combined with local architectural culture, and they are frequent subjects of research and imitation. In order to localize the design of modern architecture, this paper makes a deep comparative study of the spatial scenes and spatial composition of the Lion Grove Garden, a representative Suzhou Garden, and the National Gallery of Art's East Building, a representative work of I. M. Pei, using the method of illustration. By comparing and studying the spatial scenes (through perspective maps) observed from different angles, this paper analyses how the National Gallery of Art's East Building achieves movement using “various sceneries.” Subsequently, this paper further analyzes how the National Gallery of Art’s East Building flexibly uses the spatial design skills of “varying sceneries with changing viewpoints” from traditional gardens by analyzing the spatial composition (through axonometric drawing and perspective maps). Varying sceneries with changing viewpoints, as a fascinating and multi-dimensional architectural spatial design technique, is suitable for the spatial design of modern buildings such as galleries and museums.
