Recently, the number of museums where there is not enough room to physically accommodate them due to quantitative expansion of exhibits and operating programs and aging of old museum buildings is increasing. However, expanding the space simply required for the expansion of museums for various reasons can be complicated by the hierarchy and order of existing buildings, the guidance of visitors, the connection of Visitors Circulations, and the limit of acceptance of public spaces. In particular, the Art Institute of Chicago selected in this study expanded with the increase in exhibits and operating programs, and the complex conditions of the construction of the Millennium Park in the nearby site. At that time, the Art Institute of Chicago of Art were separated by railway rails and lost symmetry as well as complex internal structures. In the North Park, a music pavilion and bridge were being designed by an architect named Frank Gehry, who designs a landmark architecture with a strong formability in the Millennium Project. In these various and simultaneous conditions, Renzo Piano made a variety of architectural planning attempts in terms of expandability of existing museum buildings, visitor circulation, and relationship with parks due to the addition of new buildings. Based on the above, this study tried to understand the architectural planning implications that can be applied to various aspects of Renzo piano. The following conclusions were drawn from this study. First, the Chicago Museum of Art expanded to the northeastern area of existing museums and added the north-south axis to the existing east-west axis to balance the entire building. As a result, new features have been added to introduce and circulate new visitors to Millennium Park, while respecting the hierarchy and order of the buildings that have been created with entrances and exits of existing buildings. Second, the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago, like the other museum designs of Renzo Piano, does not overwhelm existing buildings by applying harmonious design methods with existing museums, and maintains the design balance for coexistence. Third, in designing the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago, Renzo Piano suggests that by linking with Millennium Park, he effectively expanded the experience of the park to integrate the spatial experience of the park and the museum. Further research such as the mutual comparison of various similar cases of Renzo piano should be necessary.
