The purpose of this paper is to analyze the loathing of Temple's body in William Faulkner's Sanctuary through the concept of Julia Kristeva's negativity. Kristeva's negativity is a re-contextualization that transforms denial into affirmation, ultimately bringing about a rupture and change in discourse and dominant society. Temple shows the process of restoring the suppressed sexuality, the semiotic of the Virgin Mary's tears. In this process, the inhuman reality of women is revealed. Temple's body shows the character of the filthy and abominable abject, for she is not connected to the symbolic gender. In the end, the application of abject to Temple's body means symbolic death to eradicate the male-centered gender, and it restores the newness of the body. The study on negativity of Temple's body draws to the possibility of the existence external to the discourse by sustaining critical thinking about discourse that regards women as male deficiencies or passive victims. In the courtroom, she shows the immorality of violating justice as much as her inhuman sexuality, which ultimately shows the negativity of 'evil is a logical form'. But this evil is a principle that is not reduced to the way it is represented by the dichotomy of an angel and devil, resulting in disturbing and rupturing the given order. While male figures are both destroyed by violations of the law and by refusal of language, Temple has redesigned her existence through a way of negativity that reveals her dirty and polluted appearance. Unlike male figures, the negativity shown by Temple is not simply a violation of the law and morality, but a practice of violation outside the principle of symbolic law that makes women a victim.
