The life journey of Kim Sung Wha, the protagonist of Gary Pak’s A Ricepaper Airplane, illustrates a multilayered form of diaspora. It includes not only the traditional trait of a strong orientation to a homeland, as emphasized by William Safran, but also the new characteristics of localization and creolization, as highlighted by Rogers Brubaker and Paul Gilroy. This paper reads the protagonist’s life in Hawaii against the historical accounts of the early Korean immigrant laborers trapped within the circuits of the rapacious Hawaii plantation economy of the early twentieth century. In so doing, it investigates the later days’ memories of both the Japanese-Filipino labor strikes of 1920 and the role of the Korean plantation workers in them, measuring them against other, alternative, histories. In his work, Gary Pak not only provides a voice to the subaltern group of Korean plantation workers but also offers a vision for pan-ethnic solidarity. Through Sung Wha’s early relationship with Filipino workers and his later commitments to the struggles of the working-class renters, the novel offers itself as a critical localist narrative that explores the Korean diaspora in Hawaii, allowing the subaltern minority class to speak for itself.
