The aim of this article is to reveal the functions of stories relating to the others attested in conversational exchanges between those who met for the first time. The study analyses free conversations produced by the pairs of people of the same age and the same gender from the perspective of Discourse Analysis. The analysis reveals that the most frequently mentioned others are “their mutual acquaintance” and “the person who is known to one of the persons in the pair.” Also, the stories of the others function as “searching for things in common,” “information offering,” “construction of empathy,” “expression of interest,” and “construction of an atmosphere through information sharing.” In the conversational exchanges where the participants are “distantly” related to each other, the stories of the others, rather than those of the participants themselves, mitigate their responsibility for the stories, and this enables smooth exchanges between the participants. It also helps them to construct and maintain an interpersonal relationship between them. In short, the stories of the others serve as a kind of strategy for building a smooth interpersonal relation.
