This study focuses on the differences of the style and vocabulary in the process of translating Kuroiwa Ruikou’s Suteobune into Lee Sanghyup’s Chŏngbuwŏn. First, in the change of style, the baron in Suteobune treats his nephew politely and formally like he is a stranger but the baron in Chŏngbuwŏn talks to his nephew in a familiar and informal way. Also, in the case of pronouns, Lee avoids translating the first person and the second person pronouns directly and includes explanatory footnotes instead. For instance, the second person pronoun “kikata” is replaced with “Baron Dokiwa” or “sir,” indicating the status or the hierarchy. Meanwhile, Lee translates most of the place names written in katakana into Korean faithfully. This change in style and vocabulary can be seen as indicating the translator’s intent rather than merely seen as a result of the translation itself. Lee changes the style to reflect the Korean emotion, replaces the pronouns with appropriate expressions to reveal the characters’ status, and attempts to introduce the Western culture by using exotic personal and place names.
