Ulvan is a green macroalgae cell wall polysaccharide that is structurally similar to mammalian glycosaminoglycans and has been utilized in biomedical research. The bioactivity of ulvan polysaccharides is affected by molecular weight. Ulvan lyase is involved in the initial degradation of ulvan polysaccharides through the β-elimination mechanism. In this study, we performed several designs to produce highly active enzymes that depolymerize into low molecular weight ulvans.
