Ulcerative colitis (UC) has recently been increasing in the East, and probiotic intake has been known to prevent it. Therefore, we studied the protective effects of kimchi (KC), a probiotic food and Leuconostoc mesenteroides DRC 1506 (DRC) isolated from kimchi on DSS-induced colitis in mice. The freeze-dried KC and DRC samples were orally administered to mice at a dose of 10<SUP>9</SUP> CFU/day. As a result, KC and DRC groups alleviated UC symptoms such as weight loss, disease activity index, and decreased colon weight to length ratio.
