In 2020, Gyeonbuk Industrial Hemp Regulation Free Zone (GIHRF, 경북산업용헴프규제자유특구) was initiated to support high-value cannabidiol (CBD) industry by using the HEMP plants in Korea.
Among different cannabis plants, hemp plants are known to contain less than 0.3% of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), the principal psychoactive constituent of cannabis, while the CBD content is relatively high.
CBD is know to be a useful substance for multiple medicinal purpose, including treating epilepsy, anti-inflammatory diseases, dementia, and etc. Although, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD so far, industrial use of non-psychoactive HEMP plants and its major substance CBD are strongly regulated and prohibited in Korea. The global HEMP market size is worth $13.4 billion as of 2018, and its expected annual growth rate was over 20% from 2021 to 2028.
