Skin is the largest organ of the body and functions as a physical protection of internal tissues from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, microorganisms, and toxic agents. It also contributes to the formation of several appendages such as hair, nails, and sweat glands.
Hair, a vital skin appendage, is stemmed from hair follicles. Hair loss, also called alopecia or baldness, is a common condition that affects both men and women, and its incidence has dramatically increased in young people. Although alopecia is not life-threatening, it causes psychological stress. Various internal and external factors such as hormones, diseases, stress, diet, smoking, and UV radiation can impact the skin function and disturb the development of skin appendages, including hair.
Recently, plant oils have been attracting great interest for cosmetic and medicinal purpose related to the skin due to their many health benefits. Plant oils may improve skin health, promote hair growth, fight against pathogens, and protect skin from sun damage. Moreover, topically applied plant oils exert a good penetration into skin and have a localized rather than systemic effects. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the potentials of several plant oils, including rosehip (Rosa canina L.) seed oil (RHSO), citron (Citrus junos Sieb. Ex Tanaka) seed oil (CSO), and red ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) oil (RGO), in stimulating scalp hair growth as well as enhancing skin health.
Our study showed that topical application of RHSO, CSO, or RGO promoted hair growth by inducing the biological progression of hair follicle from telogen to anagen and enhancing the development of hair follicles in a C57BL/6 mouse model.
