The purpose of this paper is to examine the phenomenon of adverbialization from combination ‘preposition and noun’ in Russian and to explain its grammatical, syntactic, semantic characteristics and functions in sentence. Adverbialization is defined as the process of forming an adverb from another part of speech. Combination ‘preposition and noun’ can directly modify a verb and can express manner of action, degree, modality, place, time, purpose, cause, condition. Prepositional phrase recently undergoes adverbialization in Russian, and in this process, a set of linguistic properties has changed. First, prepositional phrase must be located in the position of adverb, and it functions as adverbials in sentences. Second, noun of prepositional phrase has a abstract meaning, which cause transition to the meaning of circumstance. Third, the case of noun is isolated from morphological case paradigm. Fourth, adjectives or pronoun can not modify noun in prepositional phrase, and the position of accent can be moved to the other component. Adverbialization of prepositional phrase is related to the speakers’ strategy for enforcement of expressivity. This process is also related to the lexicalization, which is defined as a formation of lexical item, and to the analytic tendency in Russian.
