The incidence of respiratory diseases is continuously increasing by environmental pollution such as air pollution, cigarette smoke, and fine dust (particulate matter), and the respiratory diseases occur in various types such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, and pneumonia. In particular, COPD and asthma are representative respiratory diseases. Although several drugs have been developed to treat COPD and asthma such as beta2-agonist, anticholinergics, corticosteroid, and PDE4 inhibitor, long-term intake of these drugs could have adverse effects. Furthermore, the drugs are not fundamental treatment, but maintenance agents for prevention of symptom exacerbations. As an alternative to these medicines, we suggest that natural materials may ameliorate the respiratory diseases symptoms without any side effects. Natural materials can effectively regulate pulmonary inflammatory responses in the pathogenesis of COPD and asthma as follows:
