In this study, a comparative genomics approach is employed to development of species identification technology using the mitochondrial DNA of members of the loach for preserve fishery resources. Recently, there is an issue that about 80% of the loach farmed in China is exported to Korea and Japan. In Korea, loach is widely consumed as food due to the high nutritional value and taste, but the wild population of these loach species is declining significantly due to overfishing and water pollution.
