This research paper is the third of its kind among a series of studies on the cultural contents presented in 11 Chinese language I high school textbooks of the 2015 curriculum. This research analyzes “means of transfortation” in the cultural domain.
“Means of Transportation” belongs to living culture among the contents of cultural learning and is introduced in all 11 textbooks that are the subject of this research. This topic not only helps to broad views on China’s means of transportation and the ways of using them. But it also helps to better understand various aspects such as national traits and the level of civic consciousness of the Chinese people through the ways and attitudes of using different mode of transportation.
The educational objectives of Chinese language I specified in the Second Foreign Language Curriculum of the Ministry of Education (2015) are to cultivate communicative competence based on understanding of Chinese culture and to nurture a balanced attitude as a global citizen based on mutual understanding of Chinese and Korean culture.
Due to its vast territory, China has various means of long distance transportation and has its own culture from ticketing to security checking performed when boarding subways and trains. There is also a difference in the means of transportation between mega cities and small local cities.
This research analyzed cultural contents on China’s “means of transportation” introduced in 11 textbooks to see whether they are well structured and accurately delivered to meet the guidelines of the Ministry of Education so as to understand Chinese culture and to develop a balanced attitude as a global citizen, and made possible suggestions for areas that can be supplemented. All the analyses and suggestions presented in this research are intended to put forward ideas that would be used as basic data for textbook cultural education rather than to point out integrity of contents in those textbooks.
