Report Errors
Among Su Shi(蘇軾)’s poems, there are about 30 poems related to his own sons. By categorizing these poems into several types and analyzing specifically the images of the sons in Su Shi’s poetry, I studied how he regarded his sons and how he tried to convey his thought or to teach them.
Through this study, I found that there are about four types such as the heirs to the family tradition, the objects of parental love, the companions of sightseeing and the poetical partners. Among them, the former two types mean that Su Shi regarded his sons as his descendants, and the latter two types mean that he regarded his sons as his friends. The images of sons as his descendants were already seen in the poems before Su Shi’s, but I can say that the depth has been deepened in Su Shi’s poetry. And the images of sons as his friends are unique aspects which have not appeared in previous poems, so I can say that Su Shi carved out a new frontier.
I think the fact that Su Shi regarded his sons as his descendants but he deepened the depth of the poetry and he carved out a new frontier of poetry was caused by his open minded character and rationalistic liberalism.
