Purpose
Despite of various challenges during past decades, the recurrence rate after surgical resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still high and the patients who had HCC recurrences showed poor prognosis. We investigated the clinical patterns and outcomes after surgical resection for HCC and identified factors that led to changes of outcomes during past three decades in our institution.
Method
Nine hundred and thirty nine patients underwent surgical resection for HCC in department of surgery, Korea Cancer Center Hospital between 1986 and 2020.
We divided the patients into three groups by the periods, as before 2000 (1st period), between 2001 and 2010 (2nd period), and after 2011 (3rd period). We analyzed the survival rates and clinical variables of the patients and compared them among the groups.
Result
Five-year survival rates of three groups have been improved over time (1st period=55.0%, 2nd period=62.2%, 3rd period=90.0%, p<0.05).
