Purpose
Previous studies have reported oncologic safety of skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM). However, preserving nipple areola complex still has debates. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of local recurrence on overall survival in breast cancer patient treated with nipple areola preserving skin-sparing mastectomy (NASSM) and SSM.
Method
Patients treated with NASSM and SSM for stage 0~III breast cancer from 1996 to 2014 were collected. Those who had received neoadjuvant chemotherapy or distant metastasis were excluded. Patients demographics, tumor characteristics and pathologic findings were collected retrospective chart review. Survival data including local recurrence rate, disease free interval (DFI) and overall survival (OS) was analyzed.
Results
