In the early 1950s, the United States was pursuing a policy to abandon Taiwan. However, the outbreak of the Korean War completely changed this U.S. policy toward Taiwan. Before and after the outbreak of the Korean War, the paper attempted to analyze and reveal the meaning of the U.S. 7th Fleet movement shortly after the outbreak of the Korean War.
Surprisingly, the U.S. 7th Fleet did not head for the Taiwan Strait after President Truman"s statement, but was immediately deployed to the Korean peninsula after moving north from the Philippines to Japan. In other words, the deployment of the U.S. 7th Fleet to the Taiwan Strait did not take place immediately after the outbreak of the war. It was not until October, four months later, that part of the U.S. 7th Fleet turned to the Taiwan Strait.
The process of changing U.S. policy toward Taiwan was reviewed through a series of revisions to 10 NSC 37 series reports over the course of the year from 1949 to 1950. This demonstrates the concerns of the U.S. authorities about Taiwan"s strategic importance. Shortly after the outbreak of the Korean War, Truman"s statement to dispatch the 7th U.S. Fleet to the Taiwan Strait was not actually made. At that time, the actual power of the U.S. 7th Fleet was not enough to prevent communist forces from taking over, and no blockade of the Taiwan Strait was actually made.
In the end, the U.S. led to a double containment of refraining from mutual invasion by China and Taiwan, although it was only an order for bluffing.
