Various cognitive models have been proposed to represent the semantic structure of over during the past decades. However, there has been harsh criticism of their weaknesses in theory and method. Given this, the present study carries out usage-based syntagmatic research on over with focus on its “above-across” sense. With corpus data drawn from the BNC (British National Corpus), collocates and semantic associations of over are investigated in detail to construct a fine-grained image of categorical prototypicality. Drawing on an analysis of semantic function, productivity, meaning transparency, and idiomaticity, the results manifest a prototypicality gradient for the semantic/usage change of over: it can be understood as a continuum ranging from the creativity pole (e.g., the “traversing” association) to the naturalness pole (e.g., the “overcoming unpleasantness” association), with a complex and inseparable blend of the two effects in between.
