Apple fruit skin color is a major trait and affected by a combination of color and pattern. ‘Fuji’ is a very popular cultivar because fruits have high inner quality and an attractive striped pattern in their skin. ‘Beni Shogun’, its color-enhanced somatic mutant, exhibits a blushed skin interestingly but little is known about the mechanism leading to this different skin patterning in apple. To understand this phenomenon, they were characterized at five developmental stages.
