This study focuses on how Korean youth in their twenties consumed the JTBC drama 〈Itaewon Class〉, by analyzing the elements of interest and sympathy activated in the participants’ reviews of the drama. We found that Korean youth sympathized with the drama by ① the themes and messages that are tailored to the youth ② the totality of drama directing, and ③ the internalization of emotions connected to actual experiences. In terms of the themes and messages tailored to the youth, the drama goes beyond accusing the conventions of the older generations, embracing the framework of growth narrative punishing the establishment. It seems that the sense of loss felt by the precarity of the younger generation has developed into an emotion of "anger," and, in turn, has developed into a narrative of "revenge". As for support for the younger generation, it was understood that they experienced the support of "we can do it" message, while watching the experiences of success through the solidarity with the peers instead of being incorporated into the old system. Sympathy towards the minority sentiment and diversity advocacy seems to be linked to that shared by the younger generation as a minority social group. The young people not only accepted the narrative of a drama, which seems to be a kind of fantasy, but also, engaged in a tug-of-war to decode the meaning of the texts between the real reality and the fantasy created by the drama. Therefore, it can be said that young people sympathized with the drama based on their current positions and accepted the drama independently. As for the totality of drama directing, opposite opinions about the dramatization of the webtoon, the use of real-world places that can be experienced, the effect of audible interaction through the OST, and the active use of communication media were meaningful elements for the youth. The participants internalized the content emotionally by linking the episodes of the drama with their own real experiences, summarized as empirical and emotional levels of empathy, feeling of distance from real experiences and resonance reactions within the generation. The position of webtoons in Korean popular culture is ever growing, and the tendency to turn webtoons into drama productions will only increase. It was found that young people are accepting dramas not just as fictional fantasy, but as texts that are closely compared with their daily lives. Drama producers also employ a complex strategy using various media platforms. As such, we found that it is necessary to consider the complexity of the platforms and the characteristics of audience"s negotiations and interpretations rather than to focus on the television drama text itself.
