The criticism of Shakespeare’s Venus and Adonis has put too great an emphasis on Venus, especially on her rhetoric to the neglect of Adonis. Given that she is allotted much more of lines and equipped with excellent rhetoric skills and the boldness with which she advances to Adonis, the mainstream of criticism sounds reasonable. The opposite might be the case, however, if its due but ever neglected attention were paid to the main audience of the genre of the poem, epillion, as well as to the omission of Cupid. Epillion is a short-lived poem of the Renaissance that focuses on the transformation of the youth into an adult, growing out of Petrarchan chastity into Ovidian lust, which, in turn, calls attention to Adonis and his strong attachment to self-love. This article aims to shed a light on Adonis and his resistance to the temptation of Venus in relation to the omission of Cupid, the stock allegory of love poems. The exclusion of Cupid from the plot, which is ascribed to the author’s skeptical inquiry into the allegory of love, not only alludes to the categorical denial of divinity of love but also signifies the discovery of self-centered love. Shakespeare’s Adonis thus marks a significant shift in love from the god-willed, mystified love to the self-affirmation and recovery of free will in the experience of love.
