As has been well known, the Russian 〈Academy of Arts〉, which was established in the reign of the Empress Elizabeth Petrovna in 1757, was created under the heavily influence from the French 〈Royal Academy of Arts〉. From the most of its important curricula to specific administrative programs, the Russian 〈Academy of Arts〉 itself represents the starting point of Russian art, particularly painting, though it began with French artistic hierarchy and legacy from historical painting and portrait depicted the Russian tsars and tsarinas. Yet, it had not past a century until Russia found and developed her genuine characteristics, with a piece of evidence showing that ‘the 14 people’s revolt’, as well as the Wanderers following the democratic and anti-governmental power politics stand for the typically Russian style of paintings. Given these basic developments of the Russian 〈Academy of Arts〉, this article scrutinizes not only the general contour of history of Russian paintings from the early period of the imperial institute, but the so-called genuine Russian characteristics reflected in paintings, in particular. To this end, the primary purpose of this pilot experiment is to examine and explore the Russian paintings’ long history and essential features which are different from those of French arts during the period of the early 18<SUP>th</SUP> century into the second half of the 19<SUP>th</SUP> century.

1757년 상트페테르부르크에서 개원한 〈미술 아카데미〉는 제국 러시아, 제정 러시아의 역사관과 예술관을 분명하게 보여주는 엘리트 예술가를 양성하는 전문기관이었다. 회화 장르의 위계질서에서 최상위를 차지하는 역사화 장르를 가장 우선시하여 젊은 예술가들을 교육한 기관으로 출범한 아카데미는 총 4분과(회화, 조각, 건축, 판화)를 개설하였다. 아카데미는 사회적 의무와 시민의 덕행, 국가와 국가 기관에 대한 충성을 장려하는 주제를 선택하도록 학생들에게 거의 강요된 예술교육을 주입하였다. 그리하여 고대 그리스·로마의 신화 및 성경의 주제를 바탕으로 한 관변적 역사화는 가장 중요시된 교육이었다. 그러나 이러한 관행과 예술교육 방침은 점차 아카데미 내부에서 갈등과 새 양식에의 도전을 야기하였다. 1830년대부터 시작된 탈고전주의적 움직임을 비롯하여, 반제도권적 저항의 움직임은 1863년 일명 ‘14인의 반란 사건’을 통해 그 정점에 달하였다. 정부가 제시한 지정주제에 반대하여 자유 주제를 부여할 것을 요구하며 아카데미를 자진 퇴학한 14인의 저항 사건은 이후 이동파의 전신이 되었고, 19세기 후반 러시아 예술 문화의 흐름을 형성하는 가장 거대한 움직임으로 부상하였다. 본 연구는 〈미술 아카데미〉의 역사를 1)프랑스의 〈왕립 미술 아카데미〉와의 비교, 2)러시아 〈미술 아카데미〉의 기본 특징과 역사 전개, 3)14인의 반란 사건을 통해 본 러시아 예술의 특징, 4)이동파 화가들의 화풍을 기본적으로 살피면서 러시아 예술문화의 큰 흐름을 이해하고자 한다. 이로써 본 연구는 19세기를 중심으로 러시아 미술의 본질적인 특징이 반규범적 민주주의 정신, 관제적 예술 규범 타파, 친민중적인 화풍 창조, 그리고 민주주의적인 봉사 정신의 의무감 등에 있음을 제시하는 것을 가장 중요한 목적으로 한다.
