Pigs are a good experimental animal model in that they have been subject to a great deal of research with a well characterized immune system. Gestation length of minipigs is approximately 114 days and neonates are more developed at birth than other experimental animals. In addition, litter size is relatively large. The fetal or birth weight of tens or hundreds gram makes it possible to study immune system by manipulating immune cells. In this study, we evaluated the hematology and serum chemistry at gestation days 70, 84, 98, and postnatal day 0.
