Asthma is a common disease that affects over 300 million people worldwide. It is a complex inflammatory disease clinically characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness, inflammatory cell infiltration in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF) and bronchial walls, and airway structural changes. Alternaria alternata is generally considered to be an important cause of both allergic rhinitis and asthma. It is also well known as a strong inducer of Th2 response and allergic airway inflammation. Balloon flower, Platycodon grandiflorum for. albiflorum (Honda) H.Hara(PGAH), which has been widely used as a food material and for the treatment of a number of chronic inflammatory diseases in traditional oriental medicine.
