The compound verb "V + つく(thuku)" is a group of words in which the latter term is unified with "つく(thuku)", and all words are influenced by the main verb "つく(thuku)". Therefore, "V + つく(thuku)" can be regarded as a system that starts from the basic usage and extends to the peripheral usage.
This paper ascertains if the degree of semantic expansion affects the composition ratio of each semantic usage contained in "V + つく(thuku)" and the frequency of appearance of each word in novels.
As a result, the following points were clarified. First, there is no relationship between the degree of semantic expansion and the composition ratio of each semantic usage and the frequency of occurrence in each word. Second, the most frequently occurring "思い付く(omoithuku)" is 10.1% for one word, and 36.8%for only the top five words, so the frequency of appearance of each word is quite different. Third, we identified polysemous words that appear more frequently in peripheral usage than in basic usage.
