Langston Hughes has published different genre of literary works including poems, dramas, etc throughout all his life. He constantly pursues experimental techniques to embrace black people’s diverse life experience. To suggest a breakthrough for black people experiencing discrimination and inequality in American society, he experimentally uses free style of jazz in the typical format of traditional poems. The format of Hughes’s poems has the color of diversity and experimental spirit. Hughes always claims the integration of innovation and tradition. In one of his representative collection of poems YOUR MAMA shows the importance of diversity and integration dealing with diverse topics. He uses improvisation, syncopation, and marginal notes of the characteristic techniques in jazz to convey his message in his jazz poems. With the rhetorical and satirical delineation of corrupted American society, Hughes pinpoints the wrong side of American society. He also uses black’s traditional and unique diction of ‘dozens’ in the poems of ASK YOUR MAMA. He tries to complete black aesthetics through these diverse experimental poems. This study will examine Hughes’s trying to embrace black people’s true joy and sorrow through the analysis of the representative poems collected in YOUR MAMA.
