This study examined the effect of the universal child allowance implemented in September 2018 on the labor supple of married women with children. Using Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) data from 2017 to 2019 with supplementary data from Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS), this study employed a difference-in-differences method to compare the women’s labor supply between recipients and non-recipients. The analyses revealed that the universal child allowance contributed to reducing overall women’s labor supply. Specifically, it led to reducing women’s labor force participation and wage. In addition, its effects were noticeable for married women with infants aged 0-1, 0-2, 0-3, as a results of subgroup analysis that divides the children’s age of recipients into the women with child aged 0-1 vs 2-5; 0-2 vs 3-5; and 0-3 vs 4-5. On the other hand, compared to married women with infants aged 0-1, the impacts were relatively weaker in married women aged 0-2. Similarly, the impacts on married women aged 0-3 were relatively smaller compared to married women aged 0-2. Based on the evidence that the I found, I discussed various aspects of the policy implications of the universal child allowance program for the women’s labor supply and child development.
