This paper analyzes the impact of the LPI of the World Bank on the exports of the bulk cargo of South Korea, by constructing a panel data set from 2007 to 2019.
This study finds that GDP, Customs, and Tracking & tracing of trade partners have impacts on the exports of the bulk cargo whereas Infrastructure has a marginal effect on those. It is due to the fact that transportation methods are different depending on volumes and weight characteristics, and most of the final consumption areas are located around ports or on the coast, and most coal and petroleum products have exclusive ports. These findings show that differentiation strategy depending on properties of cargos are significant.
Based on these findings, it is considered that exporters of bulk cargo should focus on estimating export volumes based on demands of trade partners by considering customs clearances or Tracking & tracing of goods, instead of construction of infrastructure.
Further study is needed to identify more factors Such as climate change, which affect the imports and exports of the bulk cargo of South Korea.
