The purpose of this study aimed to shed light on the relations among sedation knowledge, clinical decision-making ability and nursing competence in sedation practice for nurses in the intensive care unit of a tertiary hospitals. The subjects for this study consisted of 149 ICU nurses who worked in intensive care units at two tertiary hospitals located in Metropolitan City B, South Korea, for more than one year. The collected data were analyzed according to frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient. The research found that knowledge about sedation had a significantly positive (+) correlation with clinical decision making ability (r=0.175, p<.05), and clinical decision making ability had a significantly positive (+) correlation with nursing competence in sedation practice (r=.246, p<0.01). Based on the findings, we suggest that in order to improve nursing competence in sedation practice, it is necessary to develop programs designed to enhance ICU nurses’ clinical decision-making ability that can be the basis for their nursing practice, to identify the level of nursing competence in sedation practice, and to provide differentiated educational support required for it.
