Cultural reaction towards a certain extreme event shows the ‘borders’ of the society, regardless of it being explicit or implicit. This study tries to provide insights through understanding Korean society by analyzing its responses toward major mass infection events of COVID-19. First mass infection involves Shincheonji, one of new religious movement in Korea. Mysterious features of Shincheonji and its leader Lee, Man-hee have piqued social interest, leading to harsh criticism and dubious claims unrelated to the pandemic. Second mass infection happened in Itaewon regarding a homosexual club. Strategies homosexuals used to conceal their social stigmas hindered investigation and response. Discrimination and hatred towards homosexuality, preexisting but implicit, reemerged under the guise of rational criticism. Meanwhile, the guidelines of social distancing shows the state’s perception towards necessity and excess. While most economic activities are considered extremely vital, those regarding entertainment are deemed excessive and even excluded from economic support from the government. The third mass infection originated from the political demonstration against the current government. Masks and cell phones, two essential objects for successful quarantine, are understood by some as symbols of suppression. The possibility of political use of quarantine to silence criticism has also been raised. Biopolitical analysis interprets this phenomenon as an inevitable absolutization of sovereignty and social retaliation against it. In conclusion, this study suggests the irony of utilizing absolute authority to construct democratic pluralism as the only solid option to successfully overcome the COVID-19 crisis.
