This study examines the qualitative changes of each L2 (Korean) vowel within the overall vowel space against Vietnamese and Chinese Korean learners, and examines the occurrence of categorical assimilation, categorical dissimilation, and other phenomena to verify Flege"s L1-L2 Interaction Hypothesis. To this end, learners were divided according to their learning experiences, and they participated in three production tests and one perception test. Production test 1 and perception test were carried out to set up the similarity between L1 vowels and the corresponding L2 vowels. Production test 2 was implemented to find out L2 vowel acquisition discrepancies of L2 learners depending upon their L2 proficiency differences. Production test 3 was planned to verify the L1-L2 Interaction Hypothesis.
The results of the experiments revealed that in the case of Chinese learners whose actual monophthongs were just 3 vowels, in order to distinguish Korean vowels, the distance between /a/-/u/ was extended and individual vowels in Korean were formed. Vietnamese learners with 11 simple vowels showed a pattern to approach the phonetic quality of each individual L2 vowel rather than to secure the categorical space of each vowel in Korean. From beginners to top level learners, Vietnamese learners showed categorical assimilation for the identical or more similar sounds, but as the learning experience increased, the intensity of categorical assimilation decreased. It was also observed that they formed L2 vowel categories for less similar or new sounds along with showing ‘near’ categorical dissimilation in the L1 vowel sound space.
Our experimental results shows that Flege"s four postulates and seven hypotheses are generally supported. However, it was confirmed that variables, such as the number of vowels and the location and the distributional space of each vowel in the L1 vowel system, were also working, which Flege did not predict.
