The purpose of this paper is to examine the textual features of records and memories reproduced in the form of literature by comparing the texts In Stahlgewittern and the Shadow of Weapons to examine the distancing strategy that is being used by the subject and the author of the work.
Ernst Jünger was born on March 29, 1895, in Heidelberg, Germany and participated in World War I in 1914. In Stahlgewittern is based on the battle he experienced when he joined the 73rd Hanover Regiment as a private soldier. The Shadow of Weapons is written by Hwang Seok-yong, a Korean writer, is also based on the author’s experience of the Vietnam War. The writer himself mentions that the Vietnam War had a definite effect on his overall work.
This study compares these two authors’ representation of the war and the textual characteristics that appeared in their records and memories as they are reproduced to literature. Furthermore, the study analyzes the functional aspects by analyzing the distancing strategy used by the subject and author himself. Just as every book and bullet have a destination, this paper intends to compare and explore the fate of the subject who has different socio-cultural, temporal, and racial backgrounds. Furthermore, it points out the psychological mechanism of the subject to turn away from political and social ideology.
