This article reorganize Korean labor literature and worker"s writing in the 70s and 80s, focusing on ‘Jeon Tae-il’. First, this article examined the aspects and meaning of labor literature and workers" writing in the 70s and 80s through ‘Jeon Tae-il’. Not only Jeon Tae-il, but also many workers wrote about their lives and labor. Workers read books with their colleagues even in a devastated day, and through reading and writing, they thought about the fundamental cause of the injustices and equality. Second, this paper analyzes the representation of ‘Jeon Tae-il’ and ‘nodong(labor) -yeol-sa’ in the context of the labor movement in the 80s, focusing on contemporary labor novels. Also labor novels, such as Ahn Jae-sung"s Strike recreating actual workers" death, showed politics of "yeol-sa" in 1980s. In particular, Jeon Tae-il"s writings and “The biography of Jeon Tae-il” had a profound influence, so workers entered the labor movement by identifying themselves with Jeon Tae-il. At the peak of that identification, ‘nodong(labor)-yeol-sa’ set her/himself on fire.
In the political and social situation after the 1990s, the position of labor literature in the mainstream literature was reduced, and due to the widespread neoliberalization, the division of labor between regular and non-regular workers and labor alienation intensified. Nevertheless, workers" writing is attracting new attention at the point where labor, gender, generation, and youth issues intersect. ‘Jeon Tae-il’ still functions as a powerful symbol that mediates the reality of today"s ‘Jeon Tae-il", and the name of ‘Jeon Tae-il" still contains the voices of desperate workers.
