The New Studies of English Language & Literature 77 (2020): 87-112. The purpose of this paper is to explore some of the key emotions such as despair, anxiety, and anger from the languages used in Shakespeare’s four major tragedies −Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth− and to examine the responses in the brain triggered by emotions and the possibility of emotions to escalate into disorders. First, the paper analyzes the languages of Hamlet, Othello, Lear, and Macbeth to explain their feelings of despair and depression and brain activation related to these emotions. Second, the study discusses anxiety and anxiety disorders through the discourse situations of Claudius, Othello and Desdemona, Goneril and the Duke of Albany, and Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to identify the hormones in the brain that can cause anxiety. Finally, this study explains anger and anger disorders through the words of Hamlet, Othello, Lear, and Macduff exploring the role of the brain in controlling feelings of anger.
