Research on marriage of young people is not simply meaningful by searching for a clue to the solutions to the problem of low birthrate in this society but is also significant in that it can obtain more specific results related to their happiness or policy-based demands. Judging that despite the significance, there is limited research on marriage of young people, this study used the data from the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) to investigate the trend of marriage after getting a job among university graduates. In particular, it focused on the differences in the trend of marriage by the first job characteristics, such as income level and position, and intended to analyze the gender differences in the influences of the job characteristics.
Many different factors, including the job characteristics, exerted different effects on marriage by gender; high-quality jobs, which involved high wage or regular work, positively affected marriage only for men, not for women. This may demonstrate that marriage can make great contributions to labor market exit among women in South Korea, where marriage frequently causes career interruption (among women), and increase opportunity cost, consequently making them reluctant or unwilling to get married.
Based on the research findings, this study concludes with several implications for more gender-involved policy development to enhance the possibility of marriage among young people, in particular, females.
