We are living in a social standby mode due to Covid-19. Hence, most airlines are experiencing a serious decrease in revenue by a sharp cutoff in passengers. Thus, we are curious about how the airline"s profit structure has changed since the coronavirus outbreak. Unexpectedly, two major Korean airlines are recently reported to increase their gross profit by rapidly increasing the transportation of air cargos compared to the second quarter of 2019 and the first quarter of 2020, even though total revenue is decreased deeply.
Therefore, it is quite natural that we ask whether we could support and derive theoretically the management strategy of Korean airline companies that has changed from customer oriented transport to logistics oriented transport. Airline Revenue Management focuses on pricing that directly affects the profit structure of airlines, and the theory applied to it is linear programming. From linear programming method, we construct a standard linear programming problem to find a maximum profit using profit function of two decision variables. Finally, a basic theorem that could explain profit structure, which the two major Korean Full-Service Carriers have established, has found and proved mathematically in Theorem 3. Also, in Theorem 3, we can conclude that managers of airlines should take a reinforced cargo-oriented management strategy while attracting existing passengers to avoid this crisis. As shown in the real cases of Korean Air and Asiana Airlines in section 2.4, it is judged to be an appropriate choice from a methodological point of view to make the profit structure model of Theorem 3 derived from linear programming and to find the optimal value of the decision variables for maximum profit in order to induce management strategies.
