The tourism industry is under a dire challenge because of the travel restrictions due to the outbreak of COVID-19. In particular, the tourism industry of the U.S, which is one of the most affected countries, is in a severe condition. The sharp decline in the number of tourists affects not only airline, hotel, and travel industries, but also the travel retail industry, whose major customers are international tourists. In this study, we aim to identify the effects of COVID-19 on the U.S. travel retail industry by investigating the industry structure, infrastructure, customers, and policy of the U.S. travel retail industry. Here are the main results; First, the U.S. travel retail industry is the third biggest in the world, trailing only China and Korea, and more than 70% of the revenue is from airport and border duty free stores. Contrary to Korea, in the U.S., it is difficult to develop downtown duty free stores, because most of the Asian tourists, e.g., Chinese tourists, are not concentrated on a particular city. Second, among about 20,000 airports in the U.S. only about 30 ~ 40 airports are capable of hosting large duty-free stores. Even among airports with a large number of international passengers, the airports that have less number of flights to Asian countries, including China, usually do not have well developed duty-free stores. Third, while the airline duty free has been declining since 2010, the cruise line duty free has been growing rapidly recently. Fourth, the sales of Dufry, which is one of the most leading travel retail companies in the U.S., in the first half of 2020 was decreased by 57.9% compared to the last year. In particular, the sales in the second quarter of 2020 was declined by more than 90%. Fifth, the sharp drop in the number of tourists due to COVID-19 has negative effects across all the duty-free sales channels, such as airport, border, airline, and cruise line duty-free sales. Lastly, to minimize the damages from the COVID-19 outbreak, the U.S. travel retail companies temporarily close a part of the duty-free stores, and save the cost by negotiating the minimum annual guarantee conditions with the airports, which has received CARES Act, the Coronavirus relief fund from the U.S. government.
