As a religious ritual from the Early Church, the sacrament of anointing was a disconnection from the tradition due to the spiritual conceptualization of oil after the Reformation. In order for the ritual of anointing to be properly and theologically understood, it is necessary to examine how this ritual was changed in the history of the church and how it affected Christians’ religious life.
James speaks of the ritual of the anointing of sacrifice as an act that benefits Christians in disease. This consists of a prayer of faith with a rite of prosperity, and reminds us of the old signs of healing that already existed but disappeared in the old days of Protestantism.
Ritual is a repetitive act with meaning, and in the past it requires form and sign. Worship is inseparable from narrative, and the ritual acts performed in worship connect the inner world with the outside world of the church community, remember the religious meaning contained in the back, and confirm the individual’s faith identity. In the meantime, to build the opposite embank for the harm and dependence of individual grace healing within Protestantism, the rite of anointing and healing needs to be restored in order to expect the appointment of the Holy Spirit, convey the meaning of God’s mysteries and symbols that cannot be captured in Protestant precepts and contain importance as a touch of comfort and love.
God used anointing as a ritual to restore the former original image to humans who have sinned through the borrowed oil as image of God. The practical meaning of the ritual is that the church is biblical and the ministry of healing, a tradition of faith that has been practiced since the early church.
Today, the church needs a ministry of healing and restoration for the modern people, and a sacramental ministry by caring for the sick and the dead. Here, the ritual of anointing can stimulate better service to the sick in the community and bring individuals a valuable experience in solidarity with the church, thereby forming a solidarity between the church and the suffering brothers and sisters, revealing their community role in caring.
