I analyzed two kinds of the high school history textbooks, History 2 in order to see how the characteristics of the high school history ‘China and East Asia’ sub-domain according to 12YNEHC in 2018 were embodied in textbooks.
In order to realize ‘Chinese history in the context of East Asia’, 52% of the Sanmin version and 42% of the Nani version newly added East Asian history or integrated it with Chinese history. In ‘migration and exchange’, both versions were described only in the case of China in the pre-modern era, but the case of China and East Asia was also described in the modern era. In particular, the Nami version reflected the purpose of 12YNEHC in 2018 by methodically explaining the migration of China, Japan and Korea since the modern times. ‘People’s Perspective’ broadened the understanding of the scope and lifestyle of ‘People’ by describing the various religious and non-religious social organizations that existed in the traditional dynasty.
In History 2, the amount of Chinese history was reduced to the minimum by adding East Asian history. If the reduction of Chinese history in history education means ‘de-Sinicization’, as the Kuomintang asserts, the ‘de- Sinicization’ of the Democratic Party’s Tsai Ing-wen government is the highest level in the regime.
