Separating Taiwanese History from Chinese History and emphasizing the ‘Special Two States’ policy that the Taiwan and mainland China belong to two different countries, Chen Shui-bian administration under the Democratic Progressive Party regime succeeded in strengthening Taiwanese identity during 2000~2008. But releasing the High School History Course Outline in 2011 and trimming High School History Course Outline in 2014, Ma Ying-Jeou administration under Kuo-min Tang regime reaffirms ‘A Republic of China, the Two Regions’ policy up to the present, that the Taiwan Strait belong to one country, not a relationship between the two countries, but a special kind of regional relations for the region.
Even though using new High School History textbooks from the new semester in September 2015, there would probably be the debate on high school history course depending on the result of the Republic of China presidential election next March. Considering the difference of the political belief between the two parties, but also even the distinct characteristics of Taiwanese society entangled with the political situation between the Taiwan Strait, I think there is an avoidable part of troubles and succeeding controversy over the Taiwanese identity.
But as much as these controversy itself associated with the politicalization of Taiwanese history education, success or failure finally depend upon whether history education reform can maintain the distance from the real politics. In summary, keeping distance from real politics, not Taiwan-based education and China-based education, is crucial for Taiwanese history education reform.
