The aim of this paper is to examine Edward Bellamy’s imagination in Looking Backward in terms of ‘collaborative commons’ referred in Zero Marginal Cost Society by Jeremy Rifkin. As Bellamy said openly that he had “no idea of attempting a serious contribution to the movement of social reform”, he imagined some ideas in Looking Backward which we can see now: using credit card, giving education to all of the individuals, having sermons on line etc. Even though many critics agreed that the book shows utopian aspects having inspired a social movement and influenced generations of urban planners and middles class reformers, I would like to say Bellamy created a kind of modern society hardly imaginable in his contemporary era compared with the ‘collaborative commons’ in which Internet of Things is seeding us to an era of nearly free goods and services a new economic paradigm.
