This study is set at the time when design archiving issues are discussed. Research on the construction of design archives has been conducted since 2011, and the construction of the National Design Museum in Sejong City was planned in the same year. However, contrary to these plans, there are voices of concern about securing design content. They do not consider what to put in and how to build a building.
In this context, the study seeks to establish a professional archive area in the field of design. In order to establish an archive system in a particular area, it is common to develop research dependent on recordology. However, in this study, we want to move away from the paradigm of relying on recordology and focus on the characteristics of design and the specificity of design records.
Three main topics were set as methods of study and the appropriate methods were used. First, based on the literature study, we looked into the post-memory concept and the reason for the record, and the meaning of the design record. Second, through an institutional survey, we looked at how design is being introduced to the public. In addition, the archive cases in the fields of culture, art, architecture, and art with similar characteristics to design were investigated. Third, by comparing and analyzing archiving cases in design-like fields, the direction needed to establish the concept of design archiving was derived.
Through this research process, design archiving should also be able to secure its own areas such as culture, art, architecture, and art. The perspective of targeting the design below this objective should also change. Designs that existed only as national events or corporate achievements should be recognized as creations and products that reflect everyday life and society. In other words, the concept of design archiving, which reflects the characteristics of the genre of design in the contemporary era and the daily and social nature of the public, needs to be entrenched, and the perspective and attitude toward design need to be changed.
